2.2 Million Have Registered For Switch 2 In Japan, Nintendo Apologizes For Being Unable To Meet Demand

Around 2.2 million individuals in Japan have registered for a Switch 2 through the My Nintendo store, resulting in the console maker apologizing in advance for being unable to meet the high launch demand.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa took to Twitter/X to share that, in order to deliver the Nintendo Switch 2 to buyers, the company has procured many materials and proceeded with production in advance. On April 2, 2025, it started accepting applications for the upcoming console’s lottery sale on the My Nintendo Store. As a result, the company has received a very large number of applications from approximately 2.2 million individuals in Japan alone.

Nintendo switch 2 demand

However, Furukawa further mentioned that 2.2 million registrations far exceed Nintendo’s expectations and far exceeds the number of Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered from the My Nintendo Store in Japan at launch on June 5, 2025. Therefore, he said that when the winners are announced tomorrow on April 24, 2025, a considerable number of customers will not be chosen for the chance to purchase the upcoming console.

The Nintendo president also mentioned that, in order to avoid the trouble of re-applying for those who were not selected in the first lottery, the My Nintendo Store will automatically carry over those who were not selected the first time to the second lottery. However, even including the number of units for the second lottery, the company cannot respond to all of the applications it has received. As such, he deeply apologized for not being able to meet the expectations of fans despite Nintendo making preparations in advance.

In response to this demand, Nintendo is currently working to further strengthen its production pipeline. In addition, starting tomorrow, on April 24, 2025, game stores and online retailers in Japan will begin accepting reservations or lotteries for the Nintendo Switch 2. The My Nintendo Store will also continue to sell the console after launch, though details on that front will be announced at a later date. Furukawa mentioned that the company will continue to ship the console with the cooperation of retailers, and will continue to make efforts to deliver as many Nintendo Switch 2 consoles as possible to its customers.
