ACE COMBAT 8 Trailer Showcases Combat and Aircraft Systems

by Greg Martin

Bandai Namco has released a new walkthrough trailer for ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE, offering a closer look at the flight combat systems, aircraft customization options, and large-scale battles that players can expect when the game launches later this year.

Developed by Bandai Namco Aces Inc., ACE COMBAT 8 marks the first mainline entry in the long-running aerial combat series in seven years. Set once again in the franchise’s fictional Strangereal universe, the game uses Unreal Engine 5 to deliver what the publisher describes as its most visually ambitious installment yet. Players who purchase the Deluxe Edition will gain Early Access beginning on September 29, 2026, ahead of the full launch on October 2 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

The newly released trailer focuses on the core gameplay systems that define the ACE COMBAT experience. Players take control of an elite pilot and engage in high-speed dogfights across environments influenced by dynamic weather conditions. The game retains the series’ signature balance between accessibility and depth, with combat built around full 360-degree flight movement, missile evasion, and precision targeting. High-G turns return as an important defensive and offensive maneuver, allowing pilots to quickly reposition during intense aerial engagements.

Wingmen will also play a larger tactical role during missions. Players can issue commands in real time, directing squadmates to attack enemies or provide cover support during combat. These orders are intended to add another strategic layer to encounters while helping players adapt to changing battlefield conditions.

Outside of combat, aircraft selection and customization remain central to mission preparation. ACE COMBAT 8 features both licensed real-world aircraft and original designs created for the series. Before each sortie, players can tailor their aircraft using upgrade components and special weapons, allowing them to build loadouts suited to specific mission objectives or preferred playstyles. Mission briefings are designed to provide additional context and strategic information, encouraging players to adjust their approach before entering combat.

The trailer also highlights some of the game’s largest threats, including enormous enemy superweapons capable of dominating the battlefield. New mechanics allow players to inflict damage on these massive targets beyond traditional weak points and designated target zones. In addition, destroyed sections of these superweapons can trigger chain reactions, with falling debris capable of damaging nearby enemy forces and creating additional opportunities during battle.

Players will also encounter elite ace squadrons that employ coordinated tactics and aggressive aerial maneuvers. According to Bandai Namco, these encounters are designed to test piloting skills, situational awareness, and mastery of the game’s combat systems.

Alongside its gameplay features, ACE COMBAT 8 promises a story-driven campaign centered on themes of duty, identity, and survival. Players assume the role of Wings of Theve, a legendary ace pilot who becomes a symbol of hope for a nation under siege. Supported by a squadron of three allied pilots, players will fight to repel an invasion by the Republic of Sotoa and reclaim their homeland throughout what Bandai Namco describes as the most cinematic campaign in the series to date.

Pre-orders for both the Standard and Deluxe Editions of ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE are available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game launches on October 2, 2026, with Deluxe Edition owners receiving Early Access beginning September 29.
