Animal Crossing: New Horizons has received version 3.0.0, introducing a wide range of updates that apply to both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, while also highlighting clear differences between the two platforms. Originally released on March 20, 2020, for Nintendo Switch, the game later debuted on Nintendo Switch 2 on January 15, 2026. This latest update reflects Nintendo’s effort to refresh the experience while preserving the core structure that has defined the title since launch.
The most immediate distinction in the Switch vs Switch 2 comparison lies in technical performance. On Nintendo Switch 2, Animal Crossing: New Horizons now runs at a resolution of 2160p scaled from 1440p. In addition to the visual upgrade, loading times have been substantially improved, with transitions reduced by approximately half compared to the original Nintendo Switch. These changes primarily affect how quickly players move between locations and load into activities, resulting in a smoother overall flow during regular play.
Version 3.0.0 also introduces a substantial set of quality-of-life improvements that apply equally to both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The home storage limit has been increased to 9,000 items, addressing long-standing constraints for players with heavily customized islands. Players can now store trees, bushes, and flowers, making it easier to reorganize large decorative layouts without permanently removing plant life. Crafting has also been streamlined, as up to ten items can now be crafted at once when sufficient materials are available.
Material management has been further simplified, with crafting materials now being consumed directly from home storage instead of requiring players to carry them in their inventory. Resetti’s Reset Service has been added, allowing players to clear large areas of the island, including furniture, flowers, and fences, while automatically sending removed items to storage. Movement controls have also been adjusted, as holding the L button while away from home allows movement based on character orientation.
Additional changes include updates to the DIY Recipes app, which now displays requests from the hotel and items requested by Tom Nook. Island Life 101 has received new tips, alongside additional Nook Miles tasks. Players can also purchase up to 50 customization kits at once from Nook’s Cranny. The delivery mailbox functionality has been updated, though details are limited.
