Respawn Entertainment has announced that Apex Legends will cease operations on the original Nintendo Switch later this year, with Season 29 serving as the final update for that platform. The studio shared the news, confirming that future seasons will continue exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 and other supported platforms.
In a statement posted by the official Apex Legends account, the developers said, “Hey legends, we want to share an important update about Apex Legends on the Nintendo Switch.” The message clarifies that Season 29 will be the last content update for the original Switch version, while “Future seasons of Apex Legends will continue to be available on Nintendo Switch 2.”
Respawn outlined several key dates and changes tied to the transition. According to the studio, “Starting August 4, 2026 (Season 30), Apex Legends will no longer be playable on the Nintendo Switch system.” However, players can continue playing normally until that date, as the developers noted, “Until August 4, 2026, players can continue to jump into the action, earn rewards, and enjoy matches per usual.”
Purchasing rules for premium currency on Nintendo Switch will also change. Respawn stated, “Beginning August 4, 2026, in-game premium currency will no longer be available for purchase on Nintendo Switch, though any existing balances can still be used before August 4, 2026.” The studio added that players will be able to use remaining balances on Nintendo Switch 2 as well.
Account continuity is emphasized as part of the transition. “All players progress, purchases, and earnings are tied to their individual EA accounts. Everything that has been earned or purchased, including Apex Coins and cosmetics, will carry over to Nintendo Switch 2, even if you purchase Nintendo Switch 2 after August 4, 2026,” Respawn explained. The statement also notes that “in some regions, local laws require you to use digital currency within 180 days of purchase.”
Respawn clarified that the announced changes apply only to the original Nintendo Switch. “All the above only applies to Nintendo Switch and not Nintendo Switch 2,” the studio said, while confirming that Apex Legends will remain available on all other supported platforms.
Addressing the reason behind the decision, Respawn wrote, “As we continue to evolve Apex Legend’s content and technical foundation, our goal is to deliver a high quality experience. Thanks to Nintendo’s investment in the Nintendo Switch 2, the platform offers a great handheld experience for Apex Legends.” The developers closed by expressing appreciation for longtime players, stating, “We are deeply grateful to the Nintendo community that has been with us on this journey since Day 1, and we hope to see you on the Dropship on Nintendo Switch 2.”
