Assassin’s Creed Syndicate recently got a 60 FPS update, allowing the game to run at 4K and 60 FPS on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series S|X. The update mostly succeeds, with the game running at 4K and 60 FPS during most gameplay. However, performance drops in scenes with heavy alpha effects.
Digital Foundry discussed Assassin’s Creed Syndicate in their podcast. They noted the game runs at a stable 60 FPS during most gameplay. However, in scenes with heavy alpha effects like cutscenes or the prologue, the Xbox Series X performs slightly better than the PS5 Pro. This surprised them, but they suggested it might be due to the backward compatibility restrictions on the PS5 Pro and the superior backward compatibility on the Xbox Series S|X.
The PS5 Pro version might be running with a restricted hardware profile to ensure backward compatibility. This means the game could be running at the PS4 profile on the PS5 Pro, not taking full advantage of the better hardware. Microsoft uses a different approach for backward compatibility, even deploying game-specific patches to add higher frame rates, HDR, or resolution to games that don’t officially support them.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is available for PS4, PC, and Xbox One. The recent patch added support for 4K and 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and 1080p at 60 FPS on the Xbox Series S.
