Team Asobi has released a new update for Astro Bot, delivering what may be the most exciting content drop yet for fans of PlayStation and Square Enix franchises. Update 1.017, available now on PlayStation 5, introduces the Vicious Void Galaxy DLC, bringing new levels, special character cameos, and surprise animations that long-time players will not want to miss.
Final Fantasy legends Cloud Strife and Sephiroth are among the most talked-about additions, and they join the game’s collection of collectible Special Bots. Fans have pointed out that interacting with these bots, specifically by tapping them multiple times, triggers custom animations. In Cloud’s case, the bot performs a humorous animation referencing his iconic Omnislash, while Sephiroth responds with Ice Magic. These interactions were showcased online, with fans such as Genki JPN sharing clips of the new content.
In addition to the Final Fantasy VII duo, the update includes other Square Enix characters like 2B from Nier: Automata, Gex from Gex, and Serge from Chrono Cross, continuing Astro Bot’s trend of celebrating gaming icons through playful tribute.
The free Vicious Void Galaxy DLC also adds five new levels, Twin-Frog Trouble, Suck It Up, Handhold Havoc, High Inflation, and a hidden fifth level that players must uncover themselves. Each of these levels introduces fresh challenges and gameplay mechanics.
The inclusion of Final Fantasy characters, along with the contribution from Square Enix, is especially noteworthy. When the game originally launched, and even during its post-launch updates that introduced free DLC, there were no bots based on Final Fantasy or any other Square Enix IP. Fans quickly picked up on this, and while Astro Bot featured many bots inspired by PlayStation’s first-party studios, the absence of characters like Cloud or Sephiroth was felt. This has now been addressed with the latest patch, and the new bots look just as impressive as fans had hoped.
Astro Bot is available now exclusively on the PS5. It was developed by Team Asobi and published by PlayStation.
