Rare’s 3D platformer, Banjo-Kazooie has been fully decompiled, and a native PC port with dual analog controls is now available.
Developer and content creator Wiseguy shared the release trailer for Banjo: Recompiled, a native PC port of the original Banjo-Kazooie that has now been fully decompiled. The project is now available to download on GitHub. This new version of the 3D platformer includes brand new features, such as dual analog controls.
Banjo-Kazooie PC Port Features
Below are the list of new features available in Banjo: Recompiled.
-
Plug-and-Play: Users are required to point the launcher to their legally owned North American v1.0 copy of Banjo-Kazooie from the main menu and begin playing immediately. The program automatically pulls all required assets from the copy.
-
Fully Intact N64 Effects: Visual elements from the original like the jigsaw puzzle transition and Bottles’ Moving Picture Game are fully intact, and ave been optimized for widescreen displays and higher frame rates. Subtle technical details, including the original mipmapping behavior, have been retained to closely match the N64 visuals.
-
Faithful Audio: All original audio processing remains intact, with no distortion, popping, or playback issues. Sequences that rely on tight audio-visual synchronization have been adjusted so timing remains accurate on modern hardware.
-
Easy-to-Use Menus: All major options, including gameplay tweaks, visual settings, controller bindings, and audio controls, are accessible through an in-game configuration menu. These menus can be fully navigated using a mouse, keyboard, or controller.
-
High Frame Rate Support: The PC port supports uncapped frame rates, with environments, character animations, screen effects, texture movement, and HUD elements all scaling smoothly at higher refresh rates.
-
Widescreen and Ultrawide Compatibility: The PC port fully supports all aspect ratios, with visual effects adjusted to display correctly in widescreen formats. Certain models and scenes have been expanded to ensure cutscenes display properly in wider formats, while pillarboxing is available to maintain the original framing when preferred.
-
Modding Support: Community-created mods and texture packs are fully supported, with the possibility of introducing new features, alter existing mechanics, or adding entirely new content.
-
Dual Analog Camera Controls: Modern dual-stick controls can be enabled for more precise camera movement, with the right analog stick being dedicated to camera control.
-
Persistent Note Collection: Musical notes can be retained when exiting a stage or after being defeated, mirroring how later versions of the original handled progression.
-
Reduced Input Latency: The PC port has been optimized to minimize input delay, resulting in more responsive controls compared to the original.
-
Near-Instant Loading: Transitions such as saving and loading files, moving between areas, or pausing the game occur almost instantly.
-
Linux and Steam Deck Compatibility: A Linux binary as well as a Flatpak is available for playing on most modern distros, including on the Steam Deck.
In addition to the above features, ray tracing support is also planned in a future update.
