Battlefield 6 Developers Explain the Return of Single-Player Campaign

During the Tokyo Game Show 2025, the developers of Battlefield 6 addressed why the upcoming installment will once again feature a single-player campaign, a mode that had been absent in recent entries. The team described its return as a deliberate effort to restore grit, narrative depth, and player immersion to the series.

When asked about the main focus of reintroducing single-player, the developers highlighted their desire to bring back “gritty, adrenaline-pumping Battlefield gameplay through memorable characters that players can love, emphasizing world-building.” One key design choice is that single-player maps connect directly to multiplayer locations, allowing players to trace events chronologically between both modes.

Addressing whether the change was influenced by fan feedback, the team explained that the decision stemmed from their vision to create a Battlefield experience of “unprecedented volume.” In their view, both multiplayer and single-player serve as the foundation of the series’ systems, with the campaign providing narrative structure and the multiplayer delivering large-scale combat.

The developers also emphasized how single-player has evolved compared to past titles. Cinematic presentation, destruction mechanics, and large-scale warfare remain central pillars, but characters now carry unique skills that make them reliable allies in battle. Players will take control of different protagonists throughout the campaign, each with distinct specialties, ensuring variety across environments ranging from coastal regions to urban areas and underground subways.

Research and authenticity also played a role in shaping the story. The team consulted military experts and various advisors to create a grounded experience. However, they clarified that the campaign does not aim to deliver commentary on real-world politics, but rather to immerse players in a believable Battlefield setting.

The developers noted that single-player and multiplayer share identical mechanics, including weapons, skills, and movement systems. The main difference is narrative placement, as campaign events occur before or after those in the multiplayer maps. This ensures continuity across both modes, reinforcing the sense of a living and evolving world.

Without revealing spoilers, Dylan Murphy, played by Jay Walker, mentioned that players should pay close attention to certain emotionally intense moments within the campaign. “There are scenes where I gave my absolute best performance emotionally, so please look forward to experiencing those,” he said.

Battlefield 6, developed by Battlefield Studios and published by Electronic Arts, is scheduled to launch on October 10, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Set in 2027, the story explores a conflict between a fractured NATO and the private military company Pax Armata. Alongside its campaign, the game will offer multiplayer modes with four returning classes—Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon—and introduce the new Escalation mode.
