Battlefield 6 Matchmaking Is The Same As In Prior Titles, Prioritizes Ping & “Time To Game”

The matchmaking system in EA and Battlefield Studios’ upcoming first-person shooter, Battlefield 6, will prioritize ping and “time to game”, just like in previous entries.

Battlefield 6 Lead Producer David Sirland took to Twitter/X to respond to a query regarding the game’s multiplayer mode, and whether skill-based matchmaking kicks in between server match-ups. He clarified that the Open beta used all matchmaking priorities that are expected to be present for launch, and that they are the same as they have been in previous titles. He added that the game prioritizes ping and “time to game” ahead of most other matchmaking criteria.

The Battlefield 6 Lead Producer further mentioned that skill is a factor, but far down the list. According to him, all of the game’s large-scale modes need a spread of skill to work well. He clarified that the “sandbox” needs many different types of skill to function well, and that this is also why the matchmaker balances teams to make them even as part of the aforementioned process.

An Open Beta player asked about the gameplay benefits of limiting map playlists and matchmaking with a group of 4 or more players to only the Portal browser. In response, he explained that it is a server browser, which contains servers, some custom experiences, and some verified ones, which, as per him, is what most are looking for on this topic. He believes that the combination of a pool of persistent servers and the spun up ones is not very useful.

Recently, Battlefield 6 Producer Alexia Christofi revealed that the open beta has a reduced set of weapons, and that the game will feature more than 40 weapons at launch. Regarding the new multiplayer mode, Escalation, she compared it to Conquest, but termed it as more intense. She explained that players start with a much higher number of capture points, which reduces over time. However, vehicle counts increase as the points decrease, so things tend to get more chaotic.
