Battlefield: Redsec Launches as a Free-to-Play Battle Royale Experience

by Greg Martin

Electronic Arts and DICE have officially launched Battlefield: Redsec, the franchise’s first free-to-play Battle Royale title. The game, available starting today, introduces large-scale survival combat for up to 48 players across the new map, Fort Lyndon, while also offering alternative multiplayer experiences inspired by the series’ history.

According to James Mattone, Senior Specialist for CRM Strategy at Battlefield Studios, Redsec aims to provide both newcomers and series veterans with a competitive yet accessible experience. The title includes multiple gameplay modes, most notably Battle Royale Initiation and Gauntlet, alongside ongoing community-driven content through Redsec’s Portal Creations.

The Battle Royale Initiation mode is designed as a low-pressure entry point for new players, featuring a condensed version of Fort Lyndon and matchmaking that prioritizes accessibility. Matches support up to 48 players, including bots, and encourage teamwork through duos-based play. Participants can select from four traditional Battlefield classes—Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon—each offering distinct combat roles and tactical advantages.

Players are tasked with scavenging weapons, armor, and resources scattered throughout the map to ensure survival while evading the “Circle of Death,” a deadly shrinking zone that forces combatants into close-quarters engagements. Optional “Contracts” provide side objectives that reward players with powerful equipment and XP. The mode introduces a “Second Chance” feature that allows for automatic redeployment early in the match, and Respawn Points enable squad members to revive fallen allies, emphasizing sustained team play.

Victory is achieved when a squad remains the last standing. As players complete matches and rank up, they unlock new items and loadout options for future sessions.

Beyond Battle Royale, Redsec includes Gauntlet, a round-based elimination mode for eight squads of four players. Each match features a series of missions requiring teams to complete objectives to earn points, with elimination for low-scoring squads. The first team to win four rounds secures overall victory. The mode highlights coordinated play through communication tools such as pings, voice chat, and text messaging, mirroring classic Battlefield multiplayer principles.

DICE emphasized that Redsec’s Portal Creations will serve as an evolving sandbox, allowing community creators to design custom experiences that will rotate regularly, ensuring long-term variety.

Battlefield: Redsec’s free-to-play model marks a notable evolution for the franchise, traditionally known for its premium releases. The decision aligns with industry trends favoring large-scale, cross-platform, and continuously updated multiplayer ecosystems.

The developers plan to expand Redsec with seasonal updates, new content, and additional features over time. Players can access the game today and begin their first drop into Fort Lyndon to experience the series’ latest take on large-scale warfare.
