Bethesda Game Studios has responded to early criticism surrounding DLSS 5, following a recent analysis video from Digital Foundry that showcased the technology in action.
Replying directly to the coverage on social media, the studio acknowledged the discussion and clarified that the current implementation represents an early look. Bethesda Game Studios stated, “Appreciate your excitement and analysis of the new DLSS 5 lighting here. This is a very early look, and our art teams will be further adjusting the lighting and final effect to look the way we think works best for each game.” The studio further emphasized that “This will all be under our artists’ control, and totally optional for players.”
The response comes amid broader concerns about how DLSS 5 may impact artistic intent in games. Earlier, NVIDIA addressed similar feedback by explaining that developers retain detailed control over how the technology is applied. In its own statement, NVIDIA said, “Important to note with this technology advance – game developers have full, detailed artistic control over DLSS 5’s effects to ensure they maintain their game’s unique aesthetic.”
NVIDIA also clarified that DLSS 5 is not simply a post-processing layer applied on top of a game. The company stated, “It’s not a filter – DLSS 5 inputs the game’s color and motion vectors for each frame into the model, anchoring the output in the source 3D content.”
DLSS 5 is positioned as a major step forward in real-time rendering, using a neural model to enhance lighting and materials. However, as both NVIDIA and Bethesda have now indicated, the final implementation will depend heavily on developer input, with studios expected to tailor the technology to match their intended visual style while keeping the feature optional for players.
