BlockBlasters Removed From Steam For Containing Malware, $32K Stolen From Streamer’s Cancer Treatment Funding

Genesis Interactive’s free to play indie action game, BlockBlasters, has been removed from Steam for containing malware.

SteamDB staff recently flagged the BlockBlasters app on Steam as suspicious, saying that it may contain malware or may be impersonating another product. It recommended exercising caution and avoiding downloading the free to play title. Subsequently, the game was removed from Valve’s digital distribution platform.

Those who already ran or installed BlockBlasters are advised to take precautionary steps to ensure the safety of their system data. According to SteamDB, the app contained infostealer/crypto malware. The game had been available on Steam for a whole month before it was flagged as suspicious. Despite that, it only had an all-time peak concurrent player count of 8 and a 24-hour peak concurrent player count of 4. As such, it appears that very few Steam users actually booted up the game.

It turns out that there is a ‘.bat’ file in BlockBlaster’s files that disables antivirus software and looks for crypto wallets and stored passwords. Streamer rastalandTV, who has been battling with stage-4  cancer, was asked to play, at the time, the Steam verified game, and had 32,000 US Dollars stolen from the cancer treatment funding they earned on Pump.fun. “I can’t breathe, I can’t think, I’m completely lost on what is going to happen next, can’t shake the feeling that it is my fault that I might end up on street again or not have anything to eat in few days… my heart wants to jump out of my mouth and it hurts”, they said.

Twitter/X user GEOFFCOINCRYPTO also had 15,000 US Dollars stolen by playing BlockBlasters possibly alongside other information from their computer. They provided a screenshot of the hacker’s address and transaction details in their post.

We sincerely hope that Valve is working with law enforcement agencies to track down the hacking group and recover all stolen money.
