Gearbox Software has officially confirmed that Borderlands 4 will be coming to Nintendo’s next-generation platform, the Switch 2, launching a few weeks after its debut on other consoles. In a video message followed by several clarifying tweets, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford revealed that the game will arrive on October 3, 2025, for the Switch 2, less than a month after its initial release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Pitchford shared his enthusiasm about the portable version, emphasizing how exciting it is for players to take Borderlands 4 on the go. However, the announcement also came with a number of technical caveats specific to the Switch 2 version. The game will run mostly at 30 frames per second, with Pitchford noting that performance may dip during graphically intense sequences or when hosting multiplayer sessions in handheld mode.

“It was important to us to not cut anything and to support cross play with other platforms,” he stated on Twitter, explaining the reasoning behind the 30 FPS target.

In addition to the framerate limitation, Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 will require a download even for those purchasing a physical copy. When asked about the possibility of including the full game on cartridge, Pitchford responded, “It’s a big game. There will be a download, even for physical copies.”

Despite some concerns from fans, Gearbox is aiming to support several modern features on the platform. According to Pitchford, the Switch 2 version will include support for mouse-style aiming when the Joy-Con is attached in a specific configuration, similar to what is seen in Metroid Prime 4. Moreover, local ad hoc co-op play for up to four players using separate consoles is confirmed.

As for Borderlands 3, which is currently not playable on the Switch 2, Pitchford acknowledged the situation and said, “Borderlands 3 was not made for Switch 2. I want us to get on that and see what we can do. We need some help and we need some time. Borderlands 4 is everything right now.”

Borderlands 4 serves as the direct sequel to the 2019 entry and the fifth main installment in the franchise. Known for its chaotic gunplay, over-the-top humor, and distinct cel-shaded art style, the series remains one of 2K’s most recognizable properties. The game is expected to launch on September 12, 2025, for other platforms, with the Switch 2 version following shortly after.
