Capcom has acknowledged ongoing fan requests for an Onimusha 3 remaster, but according to series developers Akihito Kadowaki and Satoru Nihei, the company’s current focus is entirely on the upcoming Onimusha Way of the Sword. In an interview with JPGames, the pair explained that while they hear the feedback, their development team simply does not have the capacity to pursue a remaster alongside the new title.
Kadowaki addressed the matter directly, noting, “We are very much aware that there is a desire for a remaster of Onimusha 3. It is a feedback we get a lot. But currently our team is about 170 people and we are all focused very much on Way of the Sword. To divert anybody away from that into another remaster or any other side project would detract from the current project and we don’t want to compromise Way of the Sword in any way.”
The developers added that Capcom had long been interested in returning to the Onimusha series, but the right circumstances did not come together until 2020. At that time, the studio had both the resources and the technology to properly pursue a new installment, leading to the production of Way of the Sword.
Released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, Onimusha 3: Demon Siege was the third entry in Capcom’s action-adventure series. It followed the familiar hero Samanosuke Akechi as he battled against Nobunaga Oda’s demonic forces while also sharing the spotlight with Jacques Blanc, a French officer portrayed by actor Jean Reno. The game won critical praise for its 3D visuals, cinematic cutscenes directed by Donnie Yen, and expanded combat system, though some critics felt its short length held it back. The title went on to sell over 1.5 million copies worldwide by 2008.
While fans may need to wait longer to see Onimusha 3 revived, Capcom has not entirely ignored its legacy. The publisher recently released a remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny on May 22, 2025, across modern consoles and PC. This move has only intensified calls for a similar treatment for Onimusha 3.
For now, however, the studio’s sights remain firmly set on delivering Onimusha Way of the Sword. Whether Capcom revisits its beloved 2004 entry afterward remains to be seen, but the developers’ comments suggest the possibility has not been dismissed, only delayed.
