Capcom has removed Games For Windows Live (GFWL) from PC versions of Lost Planet 1 and 2 as well as other titles on Steam alongside support for online features.
Updates were rolled out for Lost Planet, Lost Planet 2, Street Fighter x Tekken, and Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City today on Steam, removing GFWL alongside all online features. This is likely the first step towards making these games available for sale once again on Valve’s digital distribution platform, and it is expected that Capcom will bring back online multiplayer modes via its own servers sometime in the future.
For now, fans will have to make do without online multiplayer features in Lost Planet, Lost Planet 2, Street Fighter x Tekken, and Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City. Options for local multiplayer and system link are still available in some of the aforementioned titles.
It’s also worth pointing out that since save files in affected titles were previously associated with GFWL profiles, players will lose access to their existing saves. This is undoubtedly a notable inconvenience, especially for those who were in the process of playing through these titles. Nevertheless, Capcom has finally taken a step in the right direction, and will hopefully follow up by re-enabling online features in its affected games sometime soon. Several years ago, the publisher had de-listed its Steam titles that continued to rely on GFWL, a Microsoft established service that is no longer operational. At the time, it was said that the issue would be looked into, but nothing became of it up until recently.
Back in February, 2023, Capcom had made depot changes to Resident Evil 5 on Steam, which was also affected by GFWL issues at the time. Ultimately, this led to the complete removal of the service from the survival horror game, which means that it no longer requires users to download the GFWL client that no longer exists.
