CD Projekt Red has released a behind-the-scenes video offering an in-depth look at the production of the reveal trailer for The Witcher 4. The video delves into the creative process behind the trailer, explaining how the team aimed to tell a story centered around Ciri.
The video details the narrative decisions that shaped the trailer. One key idea was to contrast the destinies of Ciri and another character, Mioni. According to the developers, Mioni’s fate is tied to the traditions of Stromford, while Ciri is depicted as someone who resists her destiny.
The production process was meticulous and extensive. The developers shared that their initial meeting with CD Projekt Red was crucial in establishing a foundation that honored the past while opening the door to a new saga. They focused on making every element of the trailer—from camera movements to lighting—feel natural and cinematic. Instead of relying solely on CGI cameras, the team recorded virtual cameras on stage, creating a more organic and immersive feel. They also organized three shooting days with rented movie gear, carefully selecting lenses and capturing shots with features like distortions, lens flares, and bloom effects.
Technical innovation played a significant role in the project. The team used Unreal Engine to iterate quickly and preview changes instantly, greatly enhancing the final product. A standout aspect was the creation of a creature called the bauk. The developers divided the bauk into three distinct parts: a goblin head on a snake-like neck, front arms resembling those of a jaguar, and scorpion-like pincers, with the tail and back legs designed to evoke a dinosaur.
The trailer also used contrasting color palettes to differentiate the characters. Mioni’s visuals were set in warmer tones, while Ciri’s environment was darker and moodier, reflecting her mysterious journey. These choices were designed to help viewers feel the emotional flow of the story.
The Witcher 4 is set to be the first installment of a new trilogy, shifting focus from Geralt of Rivia to his adoptive daughter, Ciri.
