Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially rolled out Cloud Streaming for PlayStation Portal, enabling PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers to stream digital PlayStation 5 titles directly from the cloud. The update, launching globally on November 5 at 6 p.m. PT (November 6 at 2 a.m. GMT), marks one of the most significant upgrades to the handheld remote-play device since its introduction in November 2023.
The new feature allows Premium members to stream compatible PS5 games from their own digital library without needing to connect to their home console. At launch, the feature supports thousands of titles, including Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V, and Resident Evil 4. Additionally, hundreds of titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog—such as Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy, Sword of the Sea, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered—can now be streamed directly through the service.
The new functionality enables players to enjoy PS5 games on PlayStation Portal without requiring the console to be powered on or connected locally. It also supports simultaneous use, allowing one user to stream from the cloud while another uses the PS5 console for different activities, such as watching movies or playing other games.
Alongside the streaming expansion, the update introduces a redesigned user interface featuring three main sections: Remote Play, Cloud Streaming, and Search. The new layout streamlines access to both console-connected and cloud-based sessions while offering QR code integration for quick access to unavailable titles through the PlayStation App or web browser.
Several gameplay and accessibility improvements accompany the update:
- 3D Audio Support: Available for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming sessions when using compatible audio devices, including the Pulse Explore earbuds and Pulse Elite headset.
- Passcode Lock: Adds an optional security feature to protect user data and restrict unauthorized device access.
- Network Status Screen: Provides real-time connection diagnostics to ensure optimal performance during streaming or remote play.
- In-Game Store Access: Players can now make in-game purchases during Cloud Streaming sessions without exiting gameplay.
- Accessibility Enhancements: Adjustable text sizes and a screen reader option are now available through a dedicated Cloud Streaming settings menu.
- Game Invitations: Users can accept and join multiplayer invitations directly through the Quick Menu while streaming.
According to Takuro Fushimi, Senior Manager of Product Management at PlayStation, these updates are part of Sony’s broader goal to enhance the flexibility of PS5 gameplay. “We’re thrilled to bring Cloud Streaming and these new features to PS Portal, and we can’t thank the PlayStation community enough for embracing the device since its launch,” Fushimi stated.
The introduction of Cloud Streaming aligns with Sony’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its cloud infrastructure and expand its ecosystem of hardware and subscription services. By integrating the feature into PlayStation Portal, Sony aims to provide players with greater freedom to access their game libraries anywhere with a stable internet connection, effectively merging remote play convenience with next-generation streaming capabilities.
The company confirmed that further improvements to PlayStation Portal and Cloud Streaming are planned, with additional updates to be announced in the coming months.
