Crimson Desert Preview Suggests Unlocked 60 FPS Performance on Base PS5 Quality Mode

A new hands-on preview of Crimson Desert suggests the upcoming open-world action adventure may run at a frame rate higher than the traditional 30 FPS typically associated with resolution-focused modes on PlayStation 5.

During a recent media preview event, a YouTuber briefly tested the game running on a base PlayStation 5. Although direct footage captured from the console was not shown and no frame rate counter was visible on screen, the gameplay was observed firsthand during the demonstration.

Based on visual observation, the game appeared to run at approximately 4K resolution while delivering performance that felt closer to around 40 FPS. The estimate was not based on precise measurements but rather on the overall fluidity observed during the gameplay session.

If accurate, this would place Crimson Desert somewhere between the common graphics presets used by many modern AAA games. Most titles on PlayStation 5 typically offer a quality mode that targets 4K resolution at 30 FPS or a performance mode that lowers resolution to around 1080p while targeting 60 FPS. The preview suggests Crimson Desert may be attempting a middle ground by maintaining very high image quality while offering smoother frame pacing than a standard 30 FPS mode.

The demonstration reportedly involved a roughly ten-minute gameplay segment in which the player attacked a camp populated by numerous human enemies. At several points, more than a dozen characters were visible on screen simultaneously, each moving and engaging in combat independently. Despite the heavy on-screen activity, the presenter noted that the performance remained relatively stable throughout the encounter and did not experience major frame drops.

Visual quality on the base PlayStation 5 was also highlighted as a notable aspect of the preview. The environment was described as highly detailed, with dense rendering across the open world that stood out even during the limited gameplay segment. According to the presenter, the high visual fidelity could make the choice between performance and resolution modes more difficult for players if both options are included in the final release.

The preview also emphasized that the version tested during the event was not the final build of the game. The PlayStation 5 version shown was described as an earlier build, and further optimization is expected before launch. A day one patch could also improve stability and performance, meaning the final console performance may differ from what was observed during the preview.

Developed and published by Pearl Abyss, Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure set on the war-torn continent of Pywel. Players take on the role of Kliff, a mercenary leader of the Greymanes who must reunite his scattered allies after a betrayal by the rival Black Bears.

The game is powered by the studio’s proprietary BlackSpace Engine and aims to deliver a large-scale world filled with dynamic combat, exploration, and side activities. Crimson Desert recently reached gold status and is scheduled for global release on March 19, 2026.
