Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 Pro Upgrade Showcases Advantages Of Sony’s Mid-Gen Console Over PS5

Update 2.3 for CD Projekt’s action role-playing game, Cyberpunk 2077, has added some new features that can take advantage of the PS5 Pro hardware. Here’s how they compare to the base console.

Specifically, the new update has added Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support to the PS5 version of CD Projekt’s action role-playing game, allowing both the base and Pro consoles to run at frame rates higher than their respective caps in either Quality and Performance mode would allow. In terms of graphical settings, the PS5 and PS5 Pro run Cyberpunk 2077 identically, as the mid-gen console isn’t officially supported by the game.

As far as image quality goes, the PS5 and PS5 Pro run Cybepunk 2077 at a dynamic resolution in both Quality and Performance modes. In both modes, the resolution is capped at 1440p, which is then upscaled to 1800p using FSR2. Both versions appear largely identical in this case as well.

Where the PS5 and PS5 Pro versions of Cyberpunk 2077 differ is in terms of performance. In Quality mode with VRR engaged, both consoles target a frame rate of 40 fps. As one would expect, the PS5 Pro does a better job of maintaining the target compared to the base console. On the other hand, Performance mode with VRR enabled shows a wider gap in performance between the two consoles. The base PS5 runs at an average of around 63 fps while the PS5 Pro is seen running at an average of around 80 fps.

Ultimately, despite there being no official PS5 Pro support, both Quality and Performance modes in Cyberpunk 2077 can now take some advantage of its greater horsepower with VRR enabled. Quality mode delivers a more stable 40 fps on Sony’s mid-gen console, while Performance mode can run at higher frame rates than the base console.
