CD Projekt has concluded support work on Cyberpunk 2077, as the studio has turned focus towards the next entry in The Witcher series as well as several other projects.
In its financial report for the first quarter of the year 2024, CD Projekt Group shared that support work on Cyberpunk 2077 ended after its most recent update. By February 29, 2024, only 17 people from the studio’s development team were involved with rolling out content updates and bug fixes. The game’s first and only expansion, Phantom Liberty, was released on September 25, 2023, after which there wasn’t much work left for a majority of the team, which by then had moved over to work on Project Polaris.
As of April 30, 2024, a vast majority of the development team at CD Projekt is working on the next title in The Witcher series. The project is internally referred to as Polaris. Meanwhile, over 50 developers are working on Project Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, and nearly 40 are working on Project Sirius. The latter is a multiplayer spin-off set in The Witcher universe that was rebooted late in 2023.
During a recent interview, Piotr Nielubowicz, Chief Financial Officer at CD Projekt was asked for an update on the development of The Witcher 4, The Witcher remake, and Project Sirius. Regarding The Witcher 4, he mentioned that there are currently about 400 developers working on the game, with the support of about 50 people from shared services. Regarding it being an evolution or a revolution, he said that the company always strives to deliver a fresh experience, and that this would also be the case for Polaris.
As for The Witcher remake, Nielubowicz stated that development is at the early stage of conceptual work. He believes that the game will use the technology developed for The Witcher 4. With regards to Project Sirius, Nielubowicz mentioned that CD Projekt continues to work on the game and that it is more and more satisfied with the results.
