The Dead Island franchise is officially continuing. To mark the series’ 14th anniversary, developer Dambuster Studios posted a celebratory message highlighting the success of Dead Island 2 while confirming that another entry in the long-running zombie saga is already in the works.
“Celebrating 14 years of gore and guts PLUS 20 million Slayers in Dead Island 2,” the studio wrote, before adding, “From Banoi to HELL-A…and the next outbreak is already brewing.” While no further details were revealed, the statement makes it clear that the zombie carnage is far from over.
The announcement arrives on the back of Dead Island 2’s strong performance. Released in April 2023, the game transported players to a quarantined, zombie-infested Los Angeles. Featuring six playable “slayers” with unique abilities, a combat system emphasizing brutal melee mechanics, and the innovative “FLESH” procedural dismemberment technology, the title has since attracted over 20 million players.
This milestone is especially notable considering the game’s protracted development cycle, which saw multiple studios attached before Dambuster took over in 2019. Ultimately, the finished product delivered the blood-soaked chaos fans had been waiting for, revitalizing the franchise more than a decade after its debut on the tropical island of Banoi.
For now, Dambuster is keeping its next project under wraps, leaving fans to speculate whether the studio will build upon Dead Island 2’s Los Angeles setting or transport the outbreak to a new location. Regardless of the direction, the confirmation that a new installment is already underway will be welcome news for fans eager to return to the franchise’s mix of survival horror and over-the-top action.
