Charlie Cox, best known for his portrayal of Matt Murdock in Marvel’s Daredevil series, has found himself unexpectedly connected to the world of video games through his role in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Although his involvement was limited to a brief recording session, the actor remains surprised by the game’s widespread popularity and critical acclaim.
During a recent fan event, Cox was caught off guard when an audience member asked if Esquire could be friends with Matt Murdock. At first, Cox admitted confusion over the character’s identity, prompting laughter and cheers from fans familiar with Expedition 33. After being told who Esquire was, Cox shared an honest reflection on his involvement with the project.
“For those who don’t know, I was very lucky to be asked to do the voice for a computer game — Gustave — for Expedition 33,” Cox explained. “I’m not a gamer, so I haven’t played it. I knew nothing about it other than going into a studio and doing four hours of voiceover for this character.” He recalled being impressed by the game’s visuals during recording sessions, jokingly comparing them to the last game he played — Super Mario 64.
Cox also shared an amusing story about a recent encounter during a family trip. “I took my kids on a swamp tour, and two people recognized me. I assumed it was from Daredevil, but they yelled, ‘You’re Gustave!’ And I’m like… ‘Who?!’” The actor laughed, admitting that fan enthusiasm for the character caught him completely by surprise.
Expressing both humility and genuine appreciation, Cox acknowledged that he feels somewhat undeserving of the praise he has received. “I feel like a fraud because I just did the voice,” he remarked. Nonetheless, upon learning that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is considered a Game of the Year contender, Cox expressed happiness for the developers, noting that it is impressive for a smaller studio to achieve such recognition. “That’s so cool. I’m so happy for the developers — they’re not a big company,” he said, before promising fans, “I need to play the game. I need to get a console first!”
Cox’s candid remarks echo sentiments he shared in June, when he revealed that his involvement with the game amounted to a single four-hour voice session. Speaking to the press, he admitted, “Apparently, the game is awesome. I’m not a gamer. I have no idea. I haven’t played it.” However, he also praised the team behind the project, expressing sincere congratulations on the game’s success.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive, launched on April 24, 2025. The game presents a dark fantasy world shaped by Belle Époque influences, where players join a resistance group battling the supernatural entity known as the Paintress. The title blends classic turn-based role-playing mechanics with real-time elements, offering an experience inspired by Final Fantasy and Persona while introducing modern gameplay innovations.
Built initially on Unreal Engine 4 and later upgraded to Unreal Engine 5, Expedition 33 quickly became a breakout hit. It sold over 3.3 million copies within its first 33 days on the market and earned critical praise for its narrative depth, combat design, and artistic direction.
Although Charlie Cox may have entered the gaming world almost by accident, his portrayal of Gustave has clearly resonated with players worldwide, an outcome that even the actor admits he never saw coming. Whether or not Cox becomes a gamer himself remains to be seen, but fans of both Daredevil and Clair Obscur seem eager to welcome him into the community.
