Sony Interactive Entertainment and Kojima Productions’ action-adventure game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, was the hardest game for director Hideo Kojima to work on.

During the latest episode of the Koji Pro radio broadcast (via Genki_JPN), Death Stranding 2: On the Beach director Hideo Kojima shared that it was tougher to work on than any of his past projects. This was because the game was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kojima also mentioned that he fell ill during the pandemic and had to get eye surgery. As such, there were points were he didn’t know what was going to happen next, but in the end he was able to successfully finish work on Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and hopes people are looking forward to playing it.

During a recent interview, Kojima said that the thing he is most afraid of is time. He’s afraid of dying, of having dementia, of forgetting things as he gets old. He mentioned that he was 52 years old when Kojima Productions became independent, and now he is 61. He also brought up COVID-19 and how the pandemic affected the development of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. He recalled the time during spring of 2020, when he trying to shoot the action-adventure title’s opening scene, where Fragile (Léa Seydoux) visits Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus). He was unable to scan actors and do the new casting on schedule. As a result, the development of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach faced an unexpected delay. According to him, the game would’ve been released in the year 2023 if it hadn’t been for the pandemic.

Earlier, the Death Stranding 2: On the Beach director also revealed that the game was initially planned as DLC for the first title or something along the lines of a “Death Stranding 1.5.” The original concept explored how the Death Stranding event impacted the rest of the world, including the effect of Chiral clouds on rockets and likely space travel.
