Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Climbs Past One Piece Film: Red in Japan, Scores Record Taiwan Opening Weekend

The remarkable momentum of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle continues as the animated blockbuster climbs to sixth place on Japan’s all-time box office chart, surpassing the 2022 hit One Piece Film: Red. With total domestic earnings of approximately ¥21.74 billion (US$147.2 million), the film has cemented its place among Japan’s highest-grossing cinematic achievements.

According to Japan’s latest weekend box office data, Infinity Castle added $5 million in revenue, reflecting an impressive 53% increase from the previous week. This growth pushed it past One Piece Film: Red, which had earned ¥20.33 billion. It now stands just behind iconic titles like Your Name, Frozen, and Titanic in Japan’s historical rankings.

The success is not limited to the domestic market. The film’s first overseas expansion began this past weekend in Taiwan, where it achieved the largest debut ever for a Japanese production. With an estimated NT$176.7 million (US$5.9 million), the opening marked a 50% increase over the debut of Mugen Train, the 2020 installment that went on to become a box office legend. This debut ranks as the fifth-biggest overall opening in Taiwan’s history, behind only major Hollywood franchises such as Avengers and Fast & Furious.

Given these results, industry analysts expect Infinity Castle to secure a spot among Taiwan’s top three highest-grossing Japanese films once its run concludes.

Directed by Haruo Sotozaki and produced by Ufotable, Infinity Castle is a multi-part adaptation of the “Infinity Castle” arc from Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer manga. Unlike the previous compilation films, this trilogy delivers a full cinematic retelling of the arc’s events. The first installment, subtitled Akaza Returns, premiered in Japan on July 18, 2025, through Aniplex and Toho.

The film’s rollout across Asia continues throughout August, with releases in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea, before a wide global debut in September that will include the United States, United Kingdom, and several European and Middle Eastern countries.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, audience enthusiasm remains strong, driving repeat viewings and sustained box office growth. With its international launch now underway, Infinity Castle is poised to add significantly to its global tally, potentially challenging some of Japan’s most successful films in worldwide earnings.
