The latest expansion to Sony Interactive Entertainment and Bungie’s Destiny 2, The Edge of Fate, has received a recent surge of “overwhelmingly negative” reviews on Steam.
As of writing, based on a total of 321 user reviews for Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate in the last 30 days on Steam, the consensus has been “overwhelmingly negative”. The expansion’s arrival was expected to give it a boost in active players after a decline in player engagement. While that did happen initially, it didn’t take long for the numbers to drop close to how they were prior to the launch of The Edge of Fate.

Currently, Destiny 2 has a concurrent player count of over 20,000 users on Steam. However, the negative sentiment surrounding the game on the platform may not help with player engagement in the long run if developer Bungie doesn’t look into the issues being faced by users.
In their reviews, many players have been critical of the lack of content and activities in the latest DLC. One negative review complained about having 57 runs of an exotic mission that was released part of an older season pass 5 seasons ago as the only avenue to rank up. They referred to their experience with the new expansion as Bungie “throwing bones” at players and wasting their time to collect data and money to put into the next DLC.
Another player said that The Edge of Fate felt like two totally different games, where everything before the expansion has actively been made less enjoyable to play. Furthermore, they also criticized Bungie’s decision to decouple loot from game difficulty.
One player referred to The Edge of Fate’s main campaign as a “boring slog of turn into matter spark, find the generator, zap zap, opens door, kill mini boss we’ve seen a million times, end the level, repeat.” They pointed towards the light grind system as the expansion’s biggest problem, and said that it encourages solo play in a game that was designed for playing with friends.
