Final Fantasy VII Remake is headed to Nintendo Switch 2, and early impressions suggest that the port may exceed expectations. In a recent analysis, Digital Foundry expressed high praise for the game’s technical performance on Nintendo’s new-generation hardware.
Speaking about the port, Digital Foundry stated, “Right now, this is the best-looking thing I’ve seen on Switch 2. Seeing that game running at a stable 30 frames per second, with that excellent motion blur, especially, um, it looked fantastic. It was completely stable. It looked on par — actually, I would say it looks better than the PS4 version of the game. … It’s going to fall somewhere between the PS4 and PS5 versions… The image quality was absolutely superb. Like it really looked great; it matched the 1080p screen. I was really, really happy about that.”
The upcoming release of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Switch 2 will include the base game as well as the EPISODE INTERmission expansion, which adds an additional story arc to the main campaign. The game is expected to launch in late 2025, though Square Enix has not yet provided an exact release date.
Originally released for PlayStation 4 in 2020, Final Fantasy VII Remake reimagines the iconic 1997 RPG, shifting from its turn-based roots to a hybrid combat system that blends real-time action with strategic commands. Players take on the role of Cloud Strife, a mercenary who joins the eco-rebel group AVALANCHE to oppose the Shinra corporation in the cyberpunk city of Midgar.
An enhanced version of the game, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, launched on PlayStation 5 and Windows in 2021, featuring visual improvements and new content. The upcoming Switch 2 version will place the game in a unique position, aiming to deliver a visual experience closer to modern consoles while maintaining portability.
The game has sold more than seven million copies worldwide as of 2023 and helped pave the way for its sequels. The second part of the trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, was released in 2024, with a third installment planned for the future.
