Disgaea 7 Complete Review – The Ultimate Over-The-Top SRPG

by Salal Awan

Disgaea 7 Complete continues Nippon Ichi Software’s tradition of releasing a “complete” edition of a Disgaea game on a Nintendo console, typically as a timed exclusive. This version includes a significant amount of new DLC content, such as additional story modes, characters, and weapons, none of which are currently available in other editions of the game. While the decision to lock this extra content behind a specific version might seem questionable, it nonetheless gives Nintendo Switch 2 players the most feature-rich version of Disgaea 7 to date.

One of the first things worth noting is that Disgaea 7 Complete offers both graphics and performance modes on the Switch 2—a surprising inclusion, especially for a Nintendo console. To my knowledge, this is the first Disgaea title on Switch to include such an option. Interestingly, both modes appear to run at 60 FPS, which makes the distinction between them somewhat unclear. Still, I opted for the performance mode, and the game looked excellent when played in handheld mode. The visuals were sharp, the colors vibrant, and the user interface remained clean and well-optimized. It is, without a doubt, one of the better-looking Disgaea games on a handheld device.

Disgaea 7 Complete delivers a turn-based tactical RPG built around a grid-based combat system. It feels somewhat old school in that regard, but that has always been part of the series’ charm. The Disgaea games have long been known for their eccentric humor, over-the-top characters, and absurdly high damage numbers that push the limits of logic. The game encourages players to experiment with customization to achieve the most powerful damage combinations possible. The Complete edition also includes several boosters that make the game easier to approach. While these are entirely optional, they can help newcomers get started more smoothly. Given how challenging Disgaea 7 can be for first-time players, these additions make sense. However, long-time fans may find them unnecessary or even distracting from the game’s usual level of challenge.

Visually, Disgaea 7 Complete looks excellent. The animation quality, 3D character models, and background details all come together beautifully, especially on the Switch 2’s handheld screen. Even when docked, the game holds up impressively well compared to the PS5 version. I did not encounter any major performance or graphical issues, which speaks well of the port’s quality and suggests a promising future for NIS America releases on the Switch 2. In addition to its bundled DLC, this version introduces new challenges such as a Hell Mode for all characters, the ability to break damage limits, and tougher boss encounters. These additions make Disgaea 7 Complete the definitive edition of the game, offering both accessibility for newcomers and depth for returning fans.

The story of Disgaea 7 Complete follows a familiar formula for the series, beginning with a protagonist who finds themselves in a difficult situation and reluctantly teams up with someone whose personality is the complete opposite of their own. This time, the story is set in Hinomoto, a realm inspired by feudal Japan. The game features two main protagonists, Fuji and Pirilika. Fuji is a cold and battle-hardened demon warrior, while Pirilika is a wealthy and overly enthusiastic young woman who hires Fuji to do her bidding. Together, they journey across the Netherworld in search of the legendary founding weapons, confronting the dark forces that threaten Hinomoto along the way.

Disgaea 7 Complete also introduces an entirely new campaign that takes place after the events of the main story. This extra content, which must be unlocked as DLC through the main hub, includes appearances from fan-favorite characters from previous entries in the series, such as Laharl and Etna. It serves as a nostalgic bonus for long-time fans while expanding the game’s already rich narrative.

Overall, Disgaea 7 Complete is an impressive port that delivers an abundance of content, though its biggest drawback might be its relatively high launch price. Still, the value it offers is hard to deny. The amount of content, replayability, and post-game challenges make it well worth the cost, especially for dedicated fans. However, newcomers may find it demanding, as it requires time and effort to fully explore its depth. For long-time followers of the franchise, though, this definitive edition is absolutely worth owning. Even for those who played the original release, the new content and polished performance on the Switch 2 make it an excellent addition to the collection—or a great excuse to dive back in.
