Disney and Lucasfilm Planned KOTOR II Remake as Recently as March 2025

Newly surfaced court filings indicate that Disney and Lucasfilm Games were still planning a full remake of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II as recently as March 2025. The information was brought to light by journalist Stephen Totilo, who reported that the project remained on the company’s internal roadmap at the time of a legal deposition. His remarks have drawn considerable attention, largely due to the long-standing uncertainty surrounding the KOTOR franchise’s future and the lack of official updates from involved parties.

The details emerged from the deposition of Douglas Reilly, the longtime vice president of Lucasfilm Games, who confirmed that the KOTOR II remake remained part of ongoing planning discussions earlier this year. Totilo explained that Reilly stated it “is still technically on the road map” and added that “we’re starting with the remake of KOTOR I.” According to Totilo, this specific timeline reflects the deposition date rather than any subsequent changes, as Disney and Saber Interactive did not provide further comment following his inquiries. The deposition also referenced internal conversations dating back to 2020, indicating that the project had been considered for several years before becoming public knowledge.

Totilo noted that the version in development was intended to be more than a straightforward update. As he described it, the plan was for a “full remake” of Knights of the Old Republic II, complete with the long discussed cut content originally removed from the game’s launch version. He further remarked that this aspect would likely generate significant discussion, given how central the restored content has been to community interest. Much of this reporting connects to broader litigation involving Aspyr’s attempts to release restored content on platforms such as mobile devices and the Nintendo Switch.

The broader franchise remains in a complex position. The remake of the original Knights of the Old Republic was announced for PlayStation 5 and later PC, with the goal of modernizing the narrative and gameplay for contemporary audiences. That project began under Aspyr before transitioning to Saber Interactive in 2022, and although Saber has stated that the remake is still in development, it currently has no confirmed release date. Similar uncertainty applies to platform availability beyond the previously announced PC and PlayStation 5 versions, and the long running development challenges have left fans waiting for clearer updates.

The Knights of the Old Republic series holds a long standing reputation built on its branching narrative structure and its focus on player driven alignment choices. Both mainline titles have remained relevant due to ongoing ports and their narrative connection to later material within the broader Old Republic setting. Although none of these factors provide insight into the current status of either remake, the court documents reported by Totilo confirm that, at least as of March 2025, Lucasfilm Games had not abandoned its internal planning for a modern reimagining of KOTOR II.
