Disney has released the first live-action trailer for Moana, offering an initial look at its reimagined world and the return of Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui.
The trailer arrives ahead of the film’s theatrical debut on July 10, 2026, and gives audiences a glimpse of Catherine Lagaʻaia in the lead role. Johnson reprises his role from the animated original, this time in live-action form, marking one of the more anticipated elements of the adaptation.
According to the official synopsis, “In ‘Moana,’ Disney’s live action reimagining of the beloved Oscar®-nominated animated adventure, Moana (Catherine Lagaʻaia) answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.” The description adds that the film will bring back the musical identity of the original, featuring songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, alongside a score composed by Mancina.
The project is directed by Thomas Kail, known for Hamilton, and produced by a team that includes Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated films, is also attached as an executive producer.
Production on the film wrapped in late 2024, with filming taking place across Hawaii and Atlanta. The cast also includes John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
Disney’s live-action Moana is set for an exclusive theatrical release on July 10, 2026.
