Bethesda Game Studios and id Software’s first-person shooter, DOOM: The Dark Ages, will soon available on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S, and if you’re wondering how the different versions compare on the technical front, read ahead.
In terms of graphical settings, the PS5 and version of DOOM: The Dark Ages shows slight improvements in vegetation and terrain over the Xbox Series X version. The PS5 Pro runs at settings that are identical to the base console. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series S version exhibits cutbacks in terms of visual clipping. level of detail, draw distance, textures, global illumination, and post-processing.
In terms image quality, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X version of DOOM: The Dark Ages operate at a dynamic resolution that maxes out at 1440p. though the PS5 version runs at lower resolution on average. The PS5 Pro version also operates at a dynamic resolution that maxes out at 1662p. Meanwhile, the dynamic resolution in the Xbox Series S version maxes out at 1080p, but can drop as low as 635p in the open environments.
With regards to performance, the PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions of DOOM: The Dark Ages target a frame rate of 60 fps, and are able to maintain it on a largely consistent basis.
Despite the PS5 Pro delivering the best possible console experience in DOOM: The Dark Ages, the improvements over the base PS5 version don’t appear are rather modest, and limited to only a resolution boost. Given the hardware capabilities of the mid-gen console, one would have expected it to offer higher graphical settings alongside the use of PSSR. The same is true for the recent PS5 port of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
DOOM: The Dark Ages is set for release on May 15, 2025, for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
