Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake Will Not Support Upgrade or Save Transfer Between Switch and Switch 2 Versions

Square Enix has officially detailed how Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake will be handled across different Nintendo platforms, and fans looking forward to transitioning between the Nintendo Switch and its successor, the Switch 2, may want to take note. According to a newly published FAQ, there will be no upgrade path between the Switch and Switch 2 versions of the game, and save data will not transfer or be compatible across both systems.

The remake, which offers a full reimagining of the first two Dragon Quest titles in Team Asano’s distinctive HD-2D style, is set for release on October 30, 2025. It will be available on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Despite sharing a release date, Square Enix has confirmed that the Switch and Switch 2 editions will be treated as entirely separate products.

Differences between the two versions mainly relate to graphical fidelity, which has been adjusted to suit each platform’s processing capabilities. However, Square Enix stated that there will be no differences in story content, obtainable items, or gameplay mechanics. The Switch 2 version is designed specifically for the new hardware, and neither digital nor physical copies will run on the original Nintendo Switch. On the other hand, the Switch version will remain playable on both consoles but will not offer performance enhancements when played on Switch 2 hardware.

As for save data, the FAQ makes it clear that the two versions are treated as distinct software titles. Save files created on the Switch version cannot be transferred to the Switch 2 version, and vice versa. Furthermore, bonus download codes for in-game items are tied exclusively to their respective versions and will not be compatible across systems.

One exception involves players of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. Those who transfer their Dragon Quest III save data from Switch to Switch 2 can still unlock the associated save bonuses in Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake on the newer system, provided they use the same account on both consoles. Square Enix recommends visiting Nintendo’s official site for detailed guidance on transferring save data between consoles.

The FAQ also confirmed that while there is no upgrade program for moving from the Switch to Switch 2 version, a physical collector’s item—the book-shaped storage box designed for the Dragon Quest III physical release—is compatible with storing either version of the Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake cartridges.

With this clear delineation between versions, Square Enix appears to be emphasizing the unique identity of the Switch 2 hardware while ensuring that fans of the series can make an informed decision before purchase. Players will need to choose carefully based on the platform they intend to use, as no cross-version options are currently planned.
