Dragon Quest VII Reimagined has emerged as the second most successful Dragon Quest launch on Steam, based on peak concurrent player data, placing it just behind Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The milestone highlights the growing strength of the franchise on PC and reinforces the commercial impact of Square Enix’s recent remake strategy.
According to the latest figures, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined reached a peak of 27,390 concurrent players on Steam following its launch. This positions it below Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which remains the franchise’s strongest Steam debut with a peak of 45,357 concurrent players. Despite falling short of the top spot, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined has comfortably outperformed several other major entries in the series on the platform.
For comparison, Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake achieved a peak of 15,608 concurrent players, while the original PC release of Dragon Quest XI peaked at 11,793. Other titles, such as Dragon Quest X Offline and Dragon Quest Monsters, recorded significantly lower peaks of 3,538 and 2,987 players respectively. Against this broader backdrop, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined’s performance represents a clear step forward for the franchise’s PC presence.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which continues to hold the top position, launched in November 2024 and serves as a reimagining of the 1988 classic that begins the Erdrick Trilogy. Developed by Artdink in collaboration with Square Enix’s Team Asano, the title introduced modern features such as the Monster Wrangler vocation, full orchestral music, and voice acting, while adopting the distinctive HD-2D visual style. Its strong Steam debut laid the groundwork for renewed interest in the series among PC players.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined builds on that momentum with a comprehensive remake of the original 2000 PlayStation release, Fragments of the Forgotten Past. Developed by Square Enix alongside Hexadrive, the game modernizes the lengthy role-playing experience through a hand-crafted diorama visual style and adjustments designed to streamline pacing. The story follows the Hero and Prince Kiefer as they restore lost islands by collecting ancient stone fragments, gradually reshaping the present world.
The remake also introduces new gameplay systems, including the Moonlighting mechanic, which allows characters to level two vocations simultaneously, and the Let Loose command, offering vocation-specific advantages. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined launched on February 5, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
