Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Cuts Regions and Side Content, Adds New Arena Mode

by Ali Haider

Square Enix has shared fresh details on Dragon Quest VII Reimagined during its Tokyo Game Show 2025 Special Stage broadcast. The updated version of the classic RPG, set to launch on February 5, 2026, will feature significant scenario adjustments, new gameplay elements, and streamlined side content to deliver a more focused narrative and modernized experience.

One of the biggest revelations involves the removal of three regions—Gröndal, El Ciclo, and Providence. According to the developers, this decision was made after consultation with series creator Yuji Horii in order to create a more concise and impactful story. Additional changes include a new “Mysterious Fragment” system that unlocks optional stories at the player’s discretion, as well as a new scenario that will explore the childhood of the protagonist and Maribel.

Side content is also being refined. Several features from the original game will not return, including the Casino, The Haven, Monster Meadows, and the Excellence Grading Organisation. However, the Lucky Panel mini-game, previously tied to the Casino, will be reintroduced in a new format. To balance these cuts, the developers have added a brand-new Arena mode, designed as an endgame challenge where players can battle through ranks and face off against formidable opponents, including returning Demon Kings.

Combat is receiving a substantial overhaul as well. The game will adopt Symbol Encounters, allowing players to see enemies on the field rather than relying on random battles. Difficulty settings have been expanded to include Easy, Normal, and Hard modes, while additional options let players fine-tune enemy aggression and toughness. A live gameplay demo at TGS showcased the updated combat system in Aeolus Vale, highlighting the shift toward a more dynamic and player-controlled battle experience.
