Square Enix has shared new details regarding Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, clarifying how the game will function across different platforms. The information covers key differences between the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions, along with storage requirements, early access availability, and restrictions related to save data.
The publisher confirmed that the Switch 2 release of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will feature enhanced graphical specifications based on the hardware’s capabilities, though the core content and story remain identical across all versions. Unfortunately, owners of the original Switch edition will not be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version, nor will they be able to transfer save data between the two. Each version is treated as separate software, with its own icon displayed in the console library. Likewise, bonus item codes tied to one version cannot be redeemed in the other.
The company also addressed compatibility between systems. The Switch 2 version cannot be played on the original Switch console, while the Switch version will run on both platforms, though without any improvements in visual performance. Players hoping to carry progress forward will be disappointed, as saves cannot be shared between consoles. This applies not only to Dragon Quest VII Reimagined itself but also to bonus save data obtained through Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. To unlock those rewards on Switch 2, players must own the next-generation versions of both titles.
Storage requirements for the game have also been outlined. The Switch and Switch 2 editions will require at least 7 GB of free space, while the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions will need 8 GB. On PC via Steam or the Microsoft Store, the file size nearly doubles, requiring at least 15 GB of available storage. The game allows up to 15 manual save slots per account, along with a single auto-save file.
Those who purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition will receive early access starting February 3, 2026. On Steam, this will begin at 17:00 UTC, while other platforms will unlock at midnight local time. Early access remains available to any customer who buys the Digital Deluxe Edition before the game’s worldwide release on February 5, 2026.
Voice settings are also customizable, allowing players to toggle character voices on or off and switch between English and Japanese. However, touch controls are not supported on Nintendo Switch. Physical editions for Switch and PlayStation can be played offline, though an internet connection is still required for updates and downloadable content. The Switch 2 versions, meanwhile, require an internet connection at launch even with a physical key card.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined aims to provide the same experience across platforms in terms of content, but the lack of cross-save and upgrade options may frustrate players who were planning to transition from the original Switch to its successor. With early access opening in February, fans will soon have the opportunity to revisit the classic role-playing adventure in its updated form.
