Square Enix has released new details for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a full remake of the 2000 role playing game Dragon Quest VII Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The updated information offers a closer look at several redesigned gameplay systems, reinforcing the scope of the remake ahead of its scheduled release on February 5, 2026.
One of the most significant changes comes in the form of an expanded vocation system. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined introduces 10 beginner vocations, with characters starting in roles tailored specifically to them. As players progress, these vocations can evolve into intermediate and advanced classes by meeting certain conditions. Advanced vocations include powerful roles such as Hero and Druid, each offering access to stronger abilities and spells, though unlocking them is intended to be a demanding process.
The remake also introduces a new Moonlighting system, allowing players to assign two advanced vocations to a single character at the same time. This mechanic is designed to significantly broaden strategic options, encouraging experimentation with different class combinations and playstyles across the party.
Another new feature highlighted in the latest reveal is the addition of Vicious Monsters. These optional enemies are marked by a distinct visual aura and are described as far more challenging than standard encounters. Defeating them rewards players with monster hearts, collectible items that can be equipped as accessories and provide rare effects, offering additional incentives for tackling these high risk battles.
Square Enix also reminded players that a free demo is currently available on all platforms. The demo allows players to experience the opening portion of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, with progress carrying over into the full game upon release. Completing the demo also unlocks a cosmetic outfit for the character Maribel in the full version.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will launch on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.
