Square Enix has announced Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a full remake of the 2000 role-playing title Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The game is scheduled for release on February 5, 2026, across Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. The news was revealed during Nintendo’s Direct presentation on September 12.
The remake introduces a hand-crafted art direction that reimagines Akira Toriyama’s original character designs through three-dimensional models inspired by real-world dolls. The environments, towns, and dungeons adopt a diorama-like presentation, giving the game a distinct visual identity while maintaining the series’ familiar aesthetic.
Square Enix stated that the storyline will remain faithful to the original narrative, though adjustments have been made to streamline pacing. Players will still uncover new lands by collecting fragments and tablets, which gradually expand the game world. Optional side quests, minigames, and character-driven stories will also be included.
Combat has undergone notable revisions, with an updated turn-based battle system featuring a redesigned vocation mechanic. New elements include “Moonlighting,” which allows characters to adopt two classes simultaneously, “Let Loose,” a power-up triggered by emotional buildup, and a “Monster Master” role that can summon creatures during battles.
The cast includes returning characters such as Keifer, prince of Estard, and Maribel, daughter of a mayor, who join the protagonist in a journey spanning multiple islands. Quality-of-life updates such as a redesigned interface and faster progression systems are also being implemented to modernize the experience.
Alongside the standard edition, Square Enix confirmed both physical and digital premium versions. A Collector’s Edition will be sold exclusively through the Square Enix online store and includes a steel case, themed figurine, plush toy, and downloadable content packs. A Digital Deluxe Edition will offer 48 hours of early access and additional cosmetic content. Early purchasers of any version will receive in-game bonuses, including a costume based on Dragon Quest VIII and stat-enhancing items.
