Dragon Quest XI S Surpasses 8.5 Million Copies Sold, Becomes Best-Selling Entry in the Series

by Ali Haider

Square Enix has officially announced that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition has surpassed 8.5 million units sold globally, making it the highest-selling individual title in the Dragon Quest franchise to date. This milestone was confirmed in the latest press release, which also highlighted the upcoming launch of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake.

The updated sales data cements Dragon Quest XI as a standout success in the long-running RPG series, which has collectively sold over 93 million units across its various titles. Before this update, no single entry had reached the 8.5 million mark, though several titles had contributed significantly to the franchise’s overall numbers. According to the breakdown provided on Dragon Quest Wiki, the Loto Trilogy (Dragon Quest I–III) has sold over 18.7 million units, the Zenithia Trilogy (IV–VI) more than 20.9 million, and Dragon Quest VII–IX approximately 21.1 million units combined. The figure for Dragon Quest X was not disclosed, likely due to its live-service model and ongoing updates in Japan.

Originally released in 2017 for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS in Japan, Dragon Quest XI launched globally on PS4 and Windows in 2018. The definitive version, Dragon Quest XI S, debuted on the Nintendo Switch in 2019, followed by a broader release across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC between 2020 and 2021. The expanded content, orchestral soundtrack, Japanese voice acting, and quality-of-life enhancements made XI S the definitive way to experience the title, helping to drive continued interest and long-tail sales across multiple hardware generations.

Set in the world of Erdrea, Dragon Quest XI follows the journey of the Luminary, a young man destined to confront a looming darkness threatening the realm.

Dragon Quest XII is in full development, but no updates have been announced yet. Creator Yuji Horii stated that details will be shared gradually. In a recent interview, he mentioned working on several projects he can’t discuss at the moment.
