Capcom’s action role-playing game, Dragon’s Dogma 2, has been struggling in terms of sales, even in the presence of discount offers.
According to the Capcom’s updated list of Platinum Titles, a title given to games that have sold more than 1 million copies, the game has sold a total of 3.5 million copies, as of December 31, 2024. As such, sales of Dragon’s Dogma 2 have been outpaced by older Monster Hunter titles, despite the former being put on sale on a frequent basis, with discounts of up to 40%.
A majority of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s sales were front-loaded, as the game had sold around 3 million copies in May, 2024, 2 months after its launch. The remaining 0.5 million copies were sold across the rest of 2024. The action role-playing game is currently being offered at a discount of 40% across the PlayStation Store, the Xbox Store, and Steam, but that doesn’t seem to have changed things, as indicated by it being at #243 on Steam’s global top sellers.
As far as Capcom’s Platinum Titles sales chart goes, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has been outpaced by older Monster Hunter titles, including Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, Monster Hunter Generations, Monster Hunter Freedom 3, and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. However, to be fair, Monster Hunter is a long-running and established series with many releases, while Dragon’s Dogma 2 is only the second entry in its series.
While Dragon’s Dogma 2’s sales figures may seem disappointing on-paper, it’s worth putting a few things into perspective. The game launched in a rough technical state and hardly received any post-launch content updates or expansions. Despite that, it performed comparably to Capcom’s fighting game, Street Fighter 6, a game that is supported with updates and DLC, in terms of launch-aligned sales. The latter had sold around 3.7 million copies a year after its release. By March, 2025, a year after Dragon’s Dogma 2’s launch, its sales will likely reach a similar figure. All things considered, the game sold reasonably well.
