EA Allegedly Cracking Down On Battlefield 6 Portal Creations Featuring Non-Franchise Maps

EA appears to be cracking down on Battlefield 6 Portal Creations that feature maps from other multiplayer franchises.

Twitter/X user GhostGamingG has reported that EA is sending out warnings to makers of Battlefield 6 Portal Creations that reference or are recreations of multiplayer maps from other franchises.

According to an email notice shared by affected users, EA has begun issuing formal warnings to players whose Portal creations violate its Rules of Conduct. One such message stated that the company identified an “Inappropriate Reference – Third Party Products” in a user’s Battlefield 6 experience, specifically mentioning a creation titled “Shipment First Test”, a blatant nod to a popular map from Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. EA’s notice classified this as a violation and cautioned that future infractions could lead to temporary or permanent restrictions from EA games and services.

Meanwhile, Reddit user HearMeOut shared a screenshot from a message from EA Help explaining that Activision has filed a DMCA takedown of their Zombies mode. “We have disabled the Portal experience you created after receiving an intellectual property notice,” the email read, further advising users to “create a new one that incorporates only your original work.” The creator noted that Activision is the same company that has a “BF4 weapon pack” in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 workshop, yet it opted to send out a takedown notice over infringement of its intellectual property.

The Battlefield Portal mode, originally praised for encouraging creativity by letting players design custom matches and remix assets from previous Battlefield titles, seems to have become a gray area for intellectual property boundaries. While EA promotes creative freedom, it has no choice but to comply with copyright enforcement requests to avoid legal conflicts with other publishers.

Some would argue that recreating popular maps like “Shipment” is a harmless homage and part of what makes Battlefield 6 Portal engaging. However, creators will have to rename and perhaps alter such experiences enough to avoid takedowns, making them difficult for players to search for in the process.
