Eidos Montréal Layoffs Reportedly Follow Cancellation of Undisclosed Original Project

New details have emerged regarding the recent layoffs at Eidos-Montréal, with journalist Jason Schreier indicating the cuts may be tied to a canceled project that was not disclosed publicly.

Earlier, the studio confirmed that 124 employees would be affected, alongside the departure of Head of Studio David Anfossi. In its official statement, Eidos-Montréal said, “Eidos Montréal is announcing a reduction in its workforce and the departure of Head of Studio, David Anfossi,” adding that “the reduction in workforce affecting 124 employees is a result of changing project needs and impacts across production and support teams.”

Schreier has since provided additional context through posts on Reddit, suggesting the layoffs coincided with the cancellation of an unannounced original title. According to him, “Actually, the message doesn’t say this but this layoff happened in conjunction with them canceling an original game they’d been working on for quite a few years (and had a lot of struggles along the way).”

In a separate reply, he further clarified the timing of the decision, stating, “That was wrong. It was canceled today. This is me reporting that.” Schreier also acknowledged the unusual nature of sharing such information in that format, noting, “Nah, the confusion is totally understandable — I don’t usually report new info in a reddit comment.”

The reported cancellation and its connection to the layoffs have not been confirmed by Eidos-Montréal, and the studio has not publicly addressed the existence of the project. For now, Schreier’s comments provide the only insight into what may have led to the workforce reduction beyond the official explanation of shifting project needs.
