Falcom Announces New Dragon Slayer Project for Consoles to Mark 45th Anniversary

Nihon Falcom has announced a new Dragon Slayer project for consoles as part of the company’s 45th anniversary celebration. The announcement was made through the developer’s official social media account, confirming that a new consumer-focused project based on the long-dormant franchise is now in development.

In its announcement, Falcom shared a short message alongside a teaser website for the project. “To celebrate the 45th anniversary of Nihon Falcom’s founding, a new consumer project has begun,” the company stated, introducing the initiative under the name “Dragon Slayer Project” and encouraging fans to stay tuned for further updates.

Specific details about the game have not yet been revealed, including platforms, release timing, or the type of experience the project will offer. The announcement simply confirms that development has started and that more information will be shared at a later date.

The Dragon Slayer series first debuted in 1984 and is widely regarded as one of the early foundations of the action RPG genre. Created under the direction of Yoshio Kiya, the franchise became known for its experimental approach, with each numbered entry often introducing entirely new systems or branching into separate series.

Several well-known Falcom franchises originated from Dragon Slayer entries, including Xanadu and Sorcerian. Elements of the series also contributed to the early development of what later became The Legend of Heroes line of games.

Although the Dragon Slayer name itself has largely disappeared from modern releases, its design influence continues to shape Falcom’s work. Many of the mechanics and action-focused design philosophies introduced in the series can still be seen in contemporary titles from the developer, particularly the Ys franchise.

Falcom has not yet indicated when the Dragon Slayer Project will be formally unveiled, but the announcement suggests the studio is preparing to revisit one of its oldest and most influential franchises as part of its anniversary celebrations.
