Falcom CEO Toshihiro Kondo has outlined the company’s changing development focus, confirming that future projects will center on the Nintendo Switch 2. Speaking in an interview with Dengeki Online, he mentioned that internal planning now accounts for an upcoming shift in hardware support. His comments suggest that games released over the next two years are unlikely to appear on the original Nintendo Switch, signaling a steady move toward newer platforms. He also noted that Falcom did not release Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter on PS4, aligning with the company’s view that the PlayStation 4 market is gradually winding down.
During the interview, Kondo was asked about the release window for The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 2nd, the remake of Trails in the Sky SC. He replied, “We want to deliver it as soon as possible.” He added that the studio was conscious of its current pace, explaining, “Since we have good momentum, I feel we might be scolded if we make people wait for several years again.”
Kondo also addressed the company’s platform strategy. When asked whether development would stay on existing systems or move to new hardware, he stated, “We will be properly working on the Nintendo Switch 2 going forward. Regardless of whether it’s a simultaneous release or not, we want to continue with the platforms we are currently working on.” He admitted there might be different timing between platforms due to limited staffing, but affirmed that the company intends to keep supporting its current lineup. However, he added that “if it’s two years from now, the current Nintendo Switch might no longer be included.”
The discussion also touched upon transferring save data and moving between console generations. Kondo described this as something the company needs to look into carefully. “We want to do it on the Switch 2 as well, but the timing is tricky,” he said. He pointed out that the player base expanded significantly with the release of The 1st, and delaying a sequel for too long could create problems for fans eager to continue the story.
Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, which launched worldwide on September 19, 2025, is a fully rebuilt 3D remake of the starting chapter in the Trails series. It follows Estelle and Joshua Bright as they try to become senior Bracers in the Kingdom of Liberl, only to uncover a much bigger threat to the nation. Developed using the same engine as Trails into Reverie and Trails Through Daybreak, the remake features updated visuals and combat while keeping the original story. The title is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
