Far Cry 3 Classic Edition Gets Free 60 FPS Update

Ubisoft has announced a free performance update for Far Cry 3 Classic Edition, bringing 60 FPS gameplay to current-generation consoles. The update will be available starting January 21 and applies to the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro versions of the game, offering a smoother experience for players returning to the Rook Islands.

The announcement was shared through the official Far Cry social media account, which highlighted both the setting and the technical improvement. In the post, the publisher wrote, “A once-in-a-lifetime vacation. Unspoiled nature. Open skies. Everything runs smoother at 60 FPS on current gen consoles. Pack light. Things escalate fast.”

According to Ubisoft, the update applies specifically to Far Cry 3 Classic Edition, which is available on modern PlayStation platforms. The patch will be released at no additional cost and allows players to experience the game at a higher frame rate than previously possible on consoles. Prior to this update, the Classic Edition was capped at 30 FPS, even on newer hardware.

Far Cry 3 Classic Edition is accessible through Ubisoft Plus Classics as a standalone subscription. It is also included for PlayStation Plus Premium and PlayStation Plus Extra members, meaning subscribers to those services will receive the 60 FPS update automatically without requiring a separate purchase. This ensures that a large portion of the existing console audience can benefit from the improvement immediately upon release.

Far Cry 3 originally launched on November 29, 2012, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. The game later received a Classic Edition release in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which focused on visual enhancements and single player content while removing the original multiplayer and cooperative modes. Despite these upgrades, performance remained locked at 30 FPS on consoles until now.

The newly announced update represents a technical refresh rather than a re-release, but it addresses one of the most frequently cited limitations of the Classic Edition. With smoother motion and improved responsiveness, the update aims to modernize the experience while preserving the original structure of the game.
