Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake Receives Demo and Silent Hill f Collaboration

by Greg Martin

Koei Tecmo America and developer Team Ninja have announced that a playable demo for Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will be available on March 5, 2026. The demo will be released across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, giving players an early opportunity to experience the reimagined version of the classic survival horror title ahead of its full launch.

Alongside the demo announcement, Koei Tecmo confirmed that pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 version are now open. A new trailer was also released to mark the occasion, featuring music by longtime Fatal Frame collaborator Tsuki Amano. The publisher additionally revealed a crossover collaboration with Silent Hill f, the upcoming entry in Konami’s psychological horror series set in Japan.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a complete remake of the second entry in the long-running Fatal Frame franchise. The story follows twin sisters who become trapped in an abandoned village haunted by vengeful spirits. Armed only with the Camera Obscura, a mystical camera capable of capturing and sealing ghosts, players must uncover the village’s secrets while surviving increasingly dangerous supernatural encounters.

The remake introduces a number of new gameplay features and content additions. Among them is a brand new ending accompanied by the song “Utsushie,” composed by Tsuki Amano. Players can also uncover new side stories through the use of Broken Spirit Stones, which allow them to explore the past of various characters and expand the game’s overall lore. Several new locations have been added as well, including the Umbral Mound, a rope bound burial site hidden within bamboo groves, and the candlelit hall of Eikado Temple, guarded by twin statues bound together with sacred cords.

Enemy behavior has also been expanded. As players progress deeper into the village, spirits become more aggressive and may enter a powered up state in which they sprout wings, regenerate health more quickly, and attack with greater speed and strength. To counter these threats, players can equip Prayer Beads to enhance the Camera Obscura, increasing focus points and improving reload speed. Reversion Beads can be found during exploration and used to reset unlocked upgrades.

Combat customization has been broadened through new Special Shots and equippable filters for the Camera Obscura. Different filters apply unique effects, allowing players to tailor their approach to each encounter. The Paraceptual Filter enables a Blinding shot that temporarily incapacitates enemies, while the Radiant Filter grants access to Purging, a high damage attack that consumes Mio’s willpower.

Beyond combat, the Camera Obscura can also be used to photograph Twin Dolls scattered throughout Minakami Village. These dolls, modeled after the Twin Maidens, can be purified by capturing two of them in the same frame, unlocking additional items through the Point Exchange system, and revealing more of the emotions tied to their existence.

A new Photo Mode has also been added, allowing players to capture in-game moments using frames, stickers, and visual effects. This feature can be used purely for creative expression, or to potentially capture unexpected supernatural activity.

The Silent Hill f collaboration will introduce special costumes inspired by the upcoming horror title as free downloadable content at a later date. Koei Tecmo says additional details about this crossover will be shared in the coming weeks.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will launch on March 12, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The game will support Japanese and English voice acting, with text available in Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

Players can pre-order the Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes the base game, a digital soundtrack, a digital art book, and a bonus set featuring a Deluxe Charm and costumes for Mio and Mayu. A Digital Deluxe Upgrade will also be available separately. Those who purchase either a physical or digital version before March 25, 2026, will receive early purchase bonuses, including the Wraith Charm, Peony Hair Ornaments in red and blue, and kimono outfits in red and black.

Digital pre-orders made before March 12, 2026, will include additional bonuses such as the Spirit Charm, Cat Ears accessories in white and black, and classic-inspired Crimson Butterfly costumes for both Mio and Mayu.
