Fatal Frame II Remake Demo Comparison Highlights Unstable 30 FPS Performance Across Platforms

by Salal Awan

A new technical comparison of the Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake demo suggests that the game’s current performance may need further optimization ahead of its release. The analysis indicates that all platforms are targeting a 30 frames per second experience, though the frame rate appears unstable in the demo build.

According to the comparison, the remake currently features a single display mode across all versions of the game. Unlike many modern releases that provide multiple graphical presets, the demo does not offer separate performance or resolution modes.

Across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, the title targets 30 frames per second. However, the comparison suggests that the frame rate does not consistently maintain this target during gameplay, leading to noticeable fluctuations.

Visual differences between platforms were also highlighted in the analysis. As expected, the Xbox Series S and Nintendo Switch 2 versions include several graphical reductions compared to higher-end hardware. In this particular comparison, the Switch 2 version appears to fall slightly further behind the other versions, especially in areas such as vegetation density and shadow quality.

Despite these performance concerns, the remake’s overall visual presentation was described as impressive. The game reportedly delivers a strong level of graphical fidelity, though the current demo build suggests that optimization work may still be ongoing before the final release.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a complete remake of the 2003 survival horror title originally released on PlayStation 2. Developed by Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja, the game follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu as they explore the mysterious Lost Village while confronting hostile spirits using the series’ signature Camera Obscura mechanic.

The remake introduces several modern updates, including a closer over-the-shoulder camera perspective and a new “holding hands” mechanic designed to emphasize the bond between the two sisters during exploration. The project also includes a crossover collaboration with Silent Hill f.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is scheduled to launch on March 12, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. A demo version of the game is currently available ahead of release.
