FF7 Rebirth Director Says More Details on Switch 2 Version Coming Soon

by Ali Haider

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed that Square Enix will be able to share more information about the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game in the near future, as development and optimization efforts continue. The update comes as the company prepares to bring the second entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy to additional platforms in 2026.

Speaking to Polygon about the current status of the Switch 2 build, Hamaguchi said, “At this point, we have gotten the game built. Our engineers are working hard to optimize and to provide the final polish on the build. I’m hoping that we’ll be able to provide more information on Rebirth in the very near future.” His comments indicate that a functional version of the game is already in place, with the team now focused on refinement and performance tuning.

Hamaguchi also acknowledged that Rebirth represents a more demanding project compared to the first entry in the trilogy. “Compared to the first title, the world map is a lot larger, so there is no doubt that it’s a more challenging production process,” he explained. Despite the added complexity, he expressed confidence in the development team, stating, “But our engineers are very passionate about the work that they’re doing, so I’m confident that we’ll be able to deliver.”

The director addressed the technical realities of working with Nintendo’s latest hardware, noting that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade was originally built with PlayStation 5 in mind, a system that remains more powerful than the Switch 2. He suggested that developers across the industry are still adjusting to the platform and learning how best to approach ports of modern, large-scale titles.

“Switch 2 is a very appealing platform and a great piece of hardware,” Hamaguchi said. “That said, compared to other consoles, the specs are a little bit on the lower-end side. I have seen a lot of other publishers struggling to get their games to work very smoothly on the Nintendo Switch 2. But considering that this is a trilogy, and Remake being the first title within it, I really wanted to make sure that we are conveying that quality to Nintendo players for them to understand just how great Final Fantasy 7 Remake is.”

Following Square Enix’s recent shift toward a multiplatform-focused strategy, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been officially confirmed for both Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S in 2026. Remake Intergrade has already launched on these platforms as of January 2026, laying groundwork for the trilogy’s expansion beyond PlayStation.

While a specific release date for Rebirth has not yet been announced, recent reports point to a 2026 release window. Square Enix has indicated that preserving the overall experience remains a priority, even as the team navigates the technical demands of bringing such a large-scale title to additional hardware.
