Final Fantasy VII Revelation will include elements from Advent Children as part of its broader story, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi. However, whether the third game ultimately leads directly into the events of the 2005 film remains something players will have to discover for themselves.
Hamaguchi discussed the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy during an interview at Gamescom, as shared by Genki JPN. He explained that the overall goal of the Remake project has been to create a new version of Final Fantasy VII that incorporates the wider compilation, including Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus and Before Crisis.
“The theme that we have set ourselves for the whole of the Remake project, is we want to create a new FF7 from scratch which includes all of settings of the wider universe, compilation products, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Before Crisis, all the others.”
The director then drew a distinction between the game relating to Advent Children and actually incorporating it into the story. According to Hamaguchi, “It does include Advent Children, that is part of the overall story,” although this does not necessarily confirm that the events of Revelation will conclude exactly where the film begins.
“There is a big difference between whether it relates to Advent Children or whether it includes Advent Children. It’s a bit of a different question,” Hamaguchi explained. He added that whether Cloud and his companions ultimately reach the same ending depicted in Advent Children, or whether their journey takes them somewhere else, will be revealed through the final game.
Hamaguchi Recommends Playing Remake And Rebirth
Hamaguchi also changed his previous recommendation regarding how players should approach the trilogy. While he had previously described each game as a standalone experience, he now recommends playing Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth before starting Revelation.
“I’m going to say something a bit different from now. Naturally, to get the most out of the experience, I definitely believe that playing both the first and second games, in order to fully understand the story, the world and the characters’ backgrounds, will make it far more enjoyable.”
This recommendation comes as Square Enix prepares to conclude the trilogy with Revelation, which is being positioned as the culmination of more than a decade of work on the project.
Why Final Fantasy VII Revelation Has Its Name
Hamaguchi also explained the reasoning behind the game’s subtitle. According to the director, the team chose Revelation because the final game will reveal the conclusion to the entire Final Fantasy VII Remake project.
“We have been making this series for over 10 years and we really do want to reveal the ending. That is why we chose ‘Revelation’ because we are revealing and showing everything to bring this to an end.”
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to release in spring 2027. It will be the third and final instalment of the Remake trilogy and is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
