Toshiyuki Itahana, best known for his work on Final Fantasy IX, has announced that he has left Square Enix and is beginning a new chapter in his career as a freelance illustrator and character designer. The announcement was shared on his official website, where Itahana confirmed that his departure from the company took place at the end of last year, following a period of reflection about his long-term creative future.
In his statement, Itahana explained the personal reasoning behind the decision. As he put it, “As I began thinking seriously about preparing myself to continue drawing for many years to come, I decided to leave Square Enix at the end of last year.” He described the timing as meaningful, noting that 2025 marked the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX, a project closely associated with his career. He referred to the anniversary as “a truly significant event,” adding that he was grateful to see the game celebrated by fans around the world.
Itahana also directly addressed the community that participated in the anniversary activities, stating, “To everyone who celebrated with us, and to those who visited the exhibitions, shops, and cafés—thank you so very much!” He specifically noted that the Osaka collaboration café remains ongoing. With the illustration work and supervision tied to the anniversary now completed, he shared that he felt “a strong sense of accomplishment” and believed it was the appropriate moment to move on and pursue new challenges.
Following his departure, Itahana confirmed his future plans in clear terms. “From here on, I will be working as a freelance illustrator and character designer,” he said. While expressing gratitude for the professional relationships he formed during his time at Square Enix, he emphasized his intention to apply his experience toward creating a broader range of new artwork. He acknowledged that the transition is still in progress, explaining that he is currently seeking advice and learning from senior freelance illustrators as he adapts to independent work.
In closing, Itahana extended thanks to both players and colleagues. “To everyone who played the games I worked on at Square Enix, and to all those I had the pleasure of working with over the years, thank you very much,” he said, adding that he hopes for continued support going forward. He ended the message with a simple but sincere wish for the year ahead, expressing hope that it will be a happy one for everyone.
