Square Enix is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX with new artwork featuring two of the game’s most iconic characters, Zidane and Vivi. This special tribute appeared (via Genki_JPN) on the latest cover of Famitsu, one of Japan’s leading gaming magazines. It marks a major milestone for the beloved role-playing game, which first launched in 2000.
The anniversary artwork gives fans a fresh look at Zidane, the charming thief, and Vivi, the timid yet powerful black mage. While these illustrations bring back fond memories of the game’s legacy, they have also fueled ongoing speculation about a possible remake.
Rumors of a Final Fantasy IX remake have been circulating for some time, though Square Enix has yet to make any official announcement. Earlier this month, reports surfaced suggesting the project might be facing serious development troubles. Known industry insider NateDrake, also known as Nate the Hate, commented on the ResetEra forums that the remake could be in trouble — possibly even cancelled.
Nate shared that the latest update he received from his sources hinted at some worrying developments. While he said the project was still in production, the last time he checked, he also mentioned plans to follow up and confirm its status soon. For now, the remake’s future remains uncertain, leaving fans hopeful but wary.
Adding to the story, two years ago, gaming journalist Jeff Grubb claimed the Final Fantasy IX remake was indeed real. According to Grubb, the game would likely stick with its classic turn-based combat system, setting it apart from the real-time combat used in Final Fantasy VII Remake. He also suggested the project’s scope would be more in line with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion rather than a full-scale remake like Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Despite the unclear fate of the rumored remake, Square Enix has continued to honor the franchise in other ways. The publisher recently announced the upcoming localization of the Final Fantasy IX Picture Book, which tells the story of Vivi and his grandfather. Previously only available in Japan, this illustrated book is set for release in May 2026, giving international fans a new way to connect with the world of Final Fantasy IX.
