Square Enix has revealed new commemorative artwork for the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX, fueling speculation about a potential remake of the beloved role-playing game. The artwork, prominently featuring characters Zidane and Vivi, appeared on the latest cover of Famitsu (via), a leading Japanese gaming publication.
The visual tribute includes the tagline, “Once more, to the place of memories 再び、記憶の場所へ。,” a phrase that some fans believe may serve as more than just a nostalgic nod. The artwork appears in two variations, one of which was used on Famitsu’s cover, signaling a significant spotlight for the game as it reaches a milestone since its original release in 2000.
The magazine includes an extensive 18-page feature on Final Fantasy IX, with interviews from key creative staff, including commentary from character designer Toshiyuki Itahana and composer Nobuo Uematsu, both instrumental in shaping the game’s original vision. This issue also includes an art card featuring the commemorative cover.
The commemorative artwork for Final Fantasy IX’s 25th anniversary primarily serves as a celebration but has also reignited discussions about a long-rumored remake. Speculation about the project has persisted for years, gaining momentum when journalist Jeff Grubb claimed the remake was in development and would preserve the original’s turn-based combat style. According to Grubb, it would be a more modest project, similar in scale to Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion rather than the expansive Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Recently, uncertainty has surrounded the rumored Final Fantasy IX remake. Industry insider NateDrake, known as Nate the Hate, reported on ResetEra forums that the project may be facing development challenges. Although he confirmed it was still in production at his last check, his latest update indicated potential concerns. Square Enix has yet to make a formal announcement.
Square Enix is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the game by offering a significant discount on the original release across digital stores for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo. If you haven’t had the chance to play it yet, now would be a great time to dive into this classic JRPG.
